When Raden Banterang was hunting one day, a dirty beggar asking for her pity come. She was surprised to find out that the beggar was her older brother, Agung Bagus Mantra. She embraced her brother's legs. but her great respect to him was not well accepted. She was tortured for she supposedly betrayed her noble family. Agung Bagus Mantra asked his sister to kill Raden Banterang, but she rejected his request. Therefore, he was very angry and came up with the idea to slander Raden Banterang. Raden Banterang did not believe that his wife involved in a scandal with another man at the beginning. Anyhow, Agung's convincing words influenced him and made him dragged his wife to a small lake. She tried to tell the truth and denied the accusation, but her explanation made him more angrier. Finally, to proof of her sacred love, she asked her husband to kill her and ask him to throw her dead body into the river. If she did wrong, the water in the river would smell bad, but if it smelled fragrant it meant that she was innocent. Raden Banterang who was unable to control his emotion, promptly stabbed his keris and she died at that moment. He did as his wife said, and he was shock to see the river suddenly become clean and clear with a fragrant smell. He screamed madly regretted his deed deeply. Walking unsteadily he fell into the river screaming, "Banyu.. wangi, banyu…..wangi, banyu….wangi!” which mean "fragrant water " as to proof of noble and sacred love of his wife.

Raden Banterang, who rules Blambangan kingdom, used to occupy the neighboring areas to expand his territory. He met a beautiful lady named Ida Ayu Surati while hunting. Later on she was then taken to Blambangan to be his wife.
