The king of Umbul Wening, Prabu Ranubahu, had a beautiful daughter - Dewi Anum. She loves to take a bath and swim in the lake. Everytime she takes a bath, she forgets about everything, food, rest, even her duties as a princess. Eventhough the king and queen often scold  her, she never listen or pay attention to them. One day, Umbul Wening is stroke by a plaque and many citizen die. Many physicians tried to cure the people of Umbul Wening but they were unsuccessful.

Unexpectedly a monk came to see the king and said that the plaque could be cured using the plants that live in the lake located at the Krendawahanan Forest.Those plants must be taken only by Dewi Arum. So king orders her daughter to go to Krencawahana Forest to get the plants. After a long and tiring journey, they finally arrive at the lake.

Once upon a time, there was an old man with supernatural power by the name of Kiai Gede Penanggungan. He had a beautiful daughter but she was still single - Dewi Walangangin. Kiai Gede Penanggungan prayed days and nights for her daughter. Finally, a young handsome man by the name of Jaka Pandelegan came to his place. He saw the Kiai and told him that he wanted to learn a lot of things from him. The Kiai  agreed to make him his student with one condition – married his daughter.

After several years living with Kiai Gede Penanggungan, now it was time for the couple to leave him and found a new life as husband and wife. Before they go, the Kiai gave them seed of pari* and asked them to give some to people who needed. Another message was not to be arrogant when they are rich.

It’s a ceremony held by the Tengger people. The name Tengger comes from combination name of husband & wife, Roro Anteng -  a princess of the Majapahit Kingdom and a young man - Joko Seger. At one time there were wars in the Kingdom of Majapahit which resulted in the population split. Joko Seger and Roro Anteng run to residential area near the volcano and gave him the name “Tengger“.

One day Joko Seger’s vow that he would give his youngest son as a sacrifice to give to the gods as a form of love received wish after a long period of marriage that they weren’t blessed with children. In fact, he denied it. After a child of ten, Joko Seger and Roro Anteng give his youngest son named Kesuma as sacrifices. They rise to the top of Mt. Bromo and  drop in to the crater, signaling that he requested  the people to send fruits, vegetables and the cattles in the crater to the volcano every month on Kasada 14th and before the throwing events, usually they preceded with a ceremony at Pura which is located in the foot of Mt. Bromo.

As told, there was a very beautiful princess from Prambanan Kingdom named Roro Jonggrang. Her beauty was known throughout the country, and a lot of princes from different land and kingdoms came to propose her.

It was said that there was a famous prince named Bandung Bondowoso who intend to marry her. Having heard that Prince Bondowoso was coming, Roro Jonggang was very much worried as she disliked the idea of getting married. On the other hands, she understood the consequence as well if she refused the proposal. So, she decided to accept it with one condition that Bandung Bondowoso had to make her 1000 temples in one night time. If he failed, then Roro Jonggrang would not marry him.
